A couple looking for a blue gemstone engagement ring compared aquamarine, sapphire and zircon with us. They chose blue zircon for its appearance. Their story shows why seeing several materials together can make a decision clearer.
Natural zircon is not cubic zirconia
Zircon is a natural mineral used as a gemstone. Cubic zirconia is a different material commonly made in laboratories. Similar names do not mean the stones have the same identity or care requirements.
Compare colour and reflections
Look at the actual stone in more than one light. Blue zircon can show lively reflections, but cut, colour and condition vary between stones. Ask about any treatment and the evidence supporting the description.
Care for a zircon ring
Zircon ranks about 6–7.5 on the Mohs scale and can be brittle. Protect it from hard blows and avoid rubbing it against other jewellery. Discuss the proposed setting, wearing habits and a suitable cleaning method before committing to a ring.
