Choose natural alexandrite by comparing its two colour appearances, brightness, cut, condition and supporting identification. A stone’s size or a dramatic photograph alone does not tell you how appealing it will be in person.
What is alexandrite?
Alexandrite is the colour change variety of chrysoberyl. A typical attractive change moves from green or bluish green in daylight towards red or purplish red in warm lighting. Individual stones vary, and the actual lamps used affect what you see.
Compare both appearances
Ask to view the stone under suitable daylight and warm-light comparison conditions. Notice whether both colours appeal to you and whether the gem remains bright. Do not rely on an unqualified colour-change percentage: ask how any quoted figure was assessed and whether it appears in the report.
Cut, clarity and visible size
Look face-up for an attractive outline, even brightness and areas that look unusually dark or transparent. Compare measured dimensions as well as carat weight. Ask whether inclusions affect appearance or durability.
Inclusions can be identification clues, but their presence alone does not prove natural origin. Laboratory-grown alexandrite can also contain inclusions, while other materials can imitate a colour change appearance.
Read the actual report
Check that the report matches the stone’s weight, dimensions and identifying details. Read its conclusions on identity, natural or laboratory-grown origin and any treatment findings. Natural alexandrite is usually untreated, but that should not replace disclosure or an examination of the particular stone.
A geographic origin opinion or a numerical colour-change score is not included in every report. A laboratory report is not an investment valuation. Ask what further testing is appropriate if an important question remains unanswered.
Jewellery and care
Alexandrite ranks 8.5 on the Mohs scale and generally has excellent toughness. The stone’s condition, any treatment and the setting still matter. Discuss ring height, secure support and your wearing habits. Keep it away from hard knocks and follow care instructions for the finished piece.
