My father, Tay Thye Sun, introduced me to alexandrite. Its changing appearance made it a special gemstone in our family’s work, and it has since become part of proposal rings, anniversaries and birthday gifts.
Why the colour changes
Alexandrite is a colour change variety of chrysoberyl. It can look green or bluish green in daylight and reddish or purplish in warmer lighting. The actual colours and strength of the shift depend on the stone and the light sources used.
A June birthstone choice
June’s modern birthstones include pearl, moonstone and alexandrite. Alexandrite offers a light effect for someone who enjoys seeing a gem behave differently as the surroundings change. Compare both appearances, rather than choosing from one photograph.
A family story and practical questions
Our original feature showed gemstones from the collection and a video. These are historical examples. Only part of our selection is listed online, so contact us about the particular gem or occasion you have in mind.
- What supports natural origin and any treatment description?
- What condition and care should I understand?
- Does the available report match the gem?
- How will the setting show its appearance in everyday light?
