“To the moon and back” became the inspiration for a bespoke moonstone engagement ring. Its story began just after our Moons and Stars exhibition at the Singapore Night Festival in 2017.
A gemstone from the exhibition
J came to us looking for a moonstone centre for his fiancée, who loved its floating light effect. This effect, called adularescence, is associated with light scattering within the feldspar’s layered structure.
We showed him moonstones for different designs, but he preferred a stone still installed in the exhibition’s ceiling display. It felt as though he had picked a gem from the night sky.
Developing the ring
The design paired the moonstone with three clustered diamonds on each side for a classic, dainty appearance. The photographs below show the stone and part of the design development.
Choosing moonstone for a ring
Moonstone ranks 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale and has poor toughness because of cleavage. Discuss a protective setting and whether the wearer’s activities suit it. A pendant or earrings may be a better choice for someone whose hands meet frequent knocks.
Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning. Ask for care instructions for the actual piece; warm soapy water is generally appropriate for moonstone itself.

Questions buyers ask
Can moonstone be worn every day in a ring?
It needs care because of its cleavage and poor toughness. Discuss a protective setting and your activities; a pendant or earrings may be more suitable.
