Alexandrite: The Colour Change That Captivated Us

• Far East Gems & Jewellery • alexandrite • chrysoberyl • gemstone engagement ring • gemstone proposal ring • unheated gem • unique gem • untreated gem

Updated

A five-carat-plus alexandrite made our original 2015 story memorable because of the colours we saw under different lighting. In the original observation, it appeared green with a hint of red in natural light and fuchsia with a hint of green under incandescent light.

What is alexandrite?

Alexandrite is the colour change variety of chrysoberyl. Its changing appearance invites you to look again: the same stone can feel quite different in daylight and warm indoor lighting. The strength and attractiveness of the change vary between individual gems.

Why this particular gem interested us

We recorded needle-like inclusions near the bottom of the stone and a directional light effect under a strong penlight. An inclusion scene can add interest for a collector, but a photograph or a brief observation is not a substitute for laboratory identification.

The original feature also showed an alexandrite and diamond engagement ring and small round stones as jewellery ideas. These are historical examples, rather than a statement of today’s stock.

What to compare at a viewing

  • Look at both colours under daylight and a warm incandescent light or appropriate comparison lamp.
  • Compare brightness, visible dimensions and cut, as well as carat weight.
  • Ask about natural or laboratory-grown origin, condition and any available report.
  • Choose a piece you enjoy; size and rarity do not establish a resale return.

Questions buyers ask

Can a photograph show the full colour change?

It can illustrate an appearance, but lighting and camera settings affect the result. Compare the stone in person under suitable lamps.
